With reference to your communication of the
70
2nd September, 1924 (39809/24) and previous correspondence
respecting the remuneration of the Chief Justice of
Hongkong for acting as Appeal Judge at Shanghai on
occasions when it is necessary to form a full court, I
am directed by Secretary Sir Austen Chamberlain to state,
for the information of Mr. Secretary amery, that the
Comptroller and Auditor General has given instructions,
which have been confirmed by the Lords Commissioners of
His Majesty's Treasury, that the whole of the annual
contribution of ten thousand dollars made by the
Government of Hongkong towards the maintenance of the
Registry of Companies at Shanghai shall be brought to
accout by this department. It will be remembered that
under the present arrangement only seven thousand dollars
of this eum is actually paid over to His Majesty's
Consul General at Shanghai, the balance being paid to
the Chief Justice at Hongkong in respect of his services
as Appeal Judge. Mr. Amery will also recollect that
this arrangement was made in order to meet the conditions imposed by Sir H. Gollan's predecessor and that it was
to be reconsidered on the occurrence of a vacancy in the
Chief Justice's post at Shanghai.
2. In view of the Comptroller and Auditor General's
instructions
be Under-Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
